Sodding Process
Sod installation in Oakville available with Terra Verde Landscaping
For proper sod installation and root growth, specialized care and attention to detail needs to be followed. You can't just sod it, there's more to it than that.
1) Removal of the old grass, plants and weeds below the grass root matt is the first step. You can not lay sod on top of old grass.
2) Rebuild the sub-soil, adding fresh topsoil helps replenish nutrients, assist in water absorbtion and increases root growth.
3) Levelling is required to set grades and maintain proper water shedding. It also serves to remove high spots and fill in low spots which stay wet, or cause the grass to be cut too short.
4) Nutrients/fertilizers can be added to help the grass root faster but, its not always needed. Be careful with fertilizers, they can cause burns to both people and plants if used incorrectly.
5) Sodding - Install the new sod in a parallel grain direction with interlock, driveways or fences. The specialized practice of staggering the pieces is to ensure tighter seams and less gaps. This also makes it more resistant to animals and insects.
6) Watering . If the new sod is to root properly the water must penetrate the surface of the rolls and actually go through into the topsoil beneath. When watering requirements are met, the sod is guaranteed for 30 days. You will know when the sod has enough water when the soil below the root matt is consistently wet. It can be difficult to know when there is sufficient water, an In-ground Irrigation System is very useful since it can automatically add water when its needed.
To get started you will need to measure your lawn or soon to be lawn area, and then email us with the total square footage. If you need help to do this we can come out for an onsite consultation. We will look at the current grading, make suggestions for any regrading or drainage issues we find and also measure the sodding area. This consultation will be approx. 30 min to an hour and will cost $400 including tax. However if all you need is an estimate for the sodding work then by all means measure it yourself and send us all the info via our contact page.
Having a Sprinkler system installed at the same time will ensure your new sod takes as well as save you time and money. You can receive big discounts by having your sod and irrigation work done together, ask for details.

Southern Ontario's biggest pests- the Grub.
Hamilton, Burlington, and Oakville are 3 cities that have been hit hard by grubs. They in fact are a beetle that will fly over to your property and then burrow into your lawn. During their life cycle they will lay eggs that hatch, and its their larvae that will eat the roots and destroy your lawn. There are 3 types that are known to eat grass roots. These grubs have infested Southern Ontario lawns during hot dry months or entered lawns that were not maintained or watered properly, cutting too short can also stress out the grass making it more susceptable to grubs. A healthy lawn is thick and green, growing densely and keeping airborne borrowing insects out. A short or malnourished lawn is an easy target for the flying beetles. To avoid this from happening be sure to bring in clean topsoil, NOT TRIPLE MIX, and remove the existing roots of the pre-lawn. This means NO ROTOTILLING of the old surface into the ground, this is an old and outdated practice. Once this soil has been removed and roots cut out, be sure to buy sod that has been treated for grubs, not all sod is the same, you can not "just sod it" anymore. This is one benefit you get when you buy our sod and have us install it for you, it has already been treated for grubs or pests and meets the provincial and city bylaws. Remember, if you start with a healthy sub-soil and sod its much easier to keep it that way!

A little creative garden edging goes along way...
A little gardening completes this sodding project perfectly.
Even some simple garden edging and well placed Boxwoods add a lot to the look of this backyards' sodding work. What's missing? Maybe a feature rock or an Armour Stone garden bed and patio.
